Direct Flights from the UK to Sicily (2026 Guide)

Airports, routes, airlines, and the smartest way to plan your trip

Last updated: April 2026

If you are planning a trip to Sicily from the UK, the good news is that reaching the island is easier than many travellers expect. Sicily is served by a growing number of direct routes from the UK, especially during the spring, summer, and early autumn months, making it a practical destination for anything from a long weekend to a longer fly & drive journey.

That said, Mediterranean air routes are highly seasonal. Airlines, frequencies, and even departure airports can change from one year to the next, so it helps to look at the island in a strategic way before booking. In most cases, choosing the right arrival airport is just as important as choosing the flight itself.

Where do you fly into in Sicily?

Sicily has two main international airports for travellers coming from the UK:

These are the two most reliable gateways for planning a trip to the island. There are also smaller airports, such as Trapani and Comiso, which may occasionally offer seasonal options, but they are generally less consistent and should be checked case by case.

As a general rule:

  • Choose Catania if you want to explore Taormina, Mount Etna, Syracuse, Noto, Ragusa, Modica, or the Val di Noto.
  • Choose Palermo if you want to discover Palermo, Cefalù, western Sicily, Trapani, Marsala, the Egadi Islands area, or the Belice region.

For travellers planning a road trip, both airports work very well as starting points for a tailor-made itinerary.

Not sure whether to fly into Catania or Palermo? We’ve a detailed guide on how to choose the best airport depending on your trip..

In some cases, the best option is even to arrive in one airport and depart from the other, especially if you want to explore the island without backtracking.

Direct flights to Catania from the UK

Catania is one of the main entry points to Sicily and often the best choice for travellers heading to eastern Sicily. It is especially convenient for itineraries that include Taormina, Mount Etna, Ortigia, the baroque towns of the south-east, or a broader east-coast fly & drive route.

Depending on the season, direct flights to Catania may operate from airports such as London Stansted, London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Leeds Bradford, with airlines including Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air.

Typical flight time is around 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours, which makes Sicily one of the most accessible Mediterranean islands from the UK.

When Catania is the best choice

  • You want the widest access to eastern Sicily
  • You are planning a first trip to the island and want a classic itinerary
  • You are interested in a combination of sea, culture, landscapes, and food
  • You want to include Taormina or Mount Etna without long transfers

Direct flights to Palermo from the UK

Palermo is the main airport for western Sicily and a very good option if your trip focuses on Palermo itself, Cefalù, the Trapani area, the salt pans, Segesta, Marsala, or a wider route through the western side of the island.

Depending on the season, direct flights to Palermo may operate from airports such as London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, and Newcastle, with airlines including Jet2, easyJet, and Ryanair.

Flight duration is generally similar to Catania, at around 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours.

When Palermo is the best choice

  • You want to combine city life, coast, history, and western landscapes
  • You are more interested in western Sicily than in Taormina or Etna
  • You want easier access to Palermo, Cefalù, Trapani, or Marsala
  • You are considering a route that includes more authentic and less obvious corners of the island

Are there direct flights all year round?

Usually, the widest choice of direct routes is available between spring and early autumn. From May to October, some routes run several times a week and key departures may even operate daily. During the winter months, options are usually more limited and, depending on the airport, a connection may be necessary.

This is why we always recommend checking flights early if you are travelling in high season or if you want specific departure airports from the UK.

What is the best time to fly from the UK to Sicily?

For most travellers, the best balance of price, route availability, and overall travel experience tends to be:

  • May and June
  • Late September
  • October, depending on the route

July and August usually bring the highest demand, higher fares, and earlier sell-outs, especially on direct routes. April and October can still be excellent value months, although some frequencies may be lower depending on the airline.

As a rule of thumb, booking around 2 to 4 months in advance often gives a good combination of price and choice, although for school holidays and peak summer dates it is better to book earlier.

Our advice: Catania or Palermo?

If you are unsure which airport to choose, the answer depends less on the flight itself and more on the type of Sicily you want to experience.

Catania is usually the easiest choice for a first trip focused on the island’s best-known highlights in the east and south-east. Palermo is often better for travellers drawn to western Sicily, layered urban culture, and more varied west-coast landscapes.

In many tailor-made itineraries, the smartest solution is not choosing one over the other, but flying into one airport and out of the other. This saves time on the road and allows for a more natural island-crossing route.

Planning a Sicily fly & drive from the UK

If you are flying from the UK, a self-drive journey is often the best way to discover Sicily properly. Public transport can work for specific city-based trips, but it is not ideal if you want to combine countryside, coastal areas, small historic towns, and more characterful places beyond the obvious routes.

Final tips before booking

  • Book early if you are travelling in summer or during school holiday periods
  • Choose the airport based on your itinerary, not just on the cheapest fare
  • Consider open-jaw flights if you want to land in one part of Sicily and leave from another
  • Check route seasonality carefully, especially if travelling in early spring, late autumn, or winter
