Discover what to see in Syros: A Cycladic Island of Culture, History, and Authentic Charm
When most people dream of a vacation in the Greek Islands, names like Mykonos and Santorini usually come to mind. But the Cyclades archipelago is made up of over 30 inhabited islands—each with its own unique charm and character.
At Trinakria Tours, our 2023 travel collection focuses on off-the-beaten-path Greek destinations, avoiding mass tourism in favor of slow, meaningful experiences. That’s why we begin our Cycladic journey with Syros, a truly distinguished and culturally rich island. Let’s discover what to see in Syros.

Syros: Where Cycladic Charm Meets Urban Nobility
No other Cycladic island combines Greek island lifestyle with such urban elegance and cultural wealth as Syros. With influences from the ancient world, Byzantine and neoclassical eras, Catholic and Orthodox traditions, and even Asia Minor refugees, Syros is a mosaic of civilizations, ideas, and architecture.
Its people and its landscapes will guide you through centuries of history, architecture, commerce, and culture—inviting you to discover a more refined and layered side of Greece.

Beaches, Nature Trails & Culinary Pleasures
From crystal-clear beaches to scenic walking paths, Syros invites you to reconnect with nature. Local flavors and aromas heighten the senses, and the hospitality of Hermoupolis and its charming villages will make you feel at home. Located near both Piraeus and Rafina ports, and with daily flights from Athens and Thessaloniki, Syros is easily accessible year-round.
Top Attractions in Syros
Most of Syros’ must-see attractions are located in Hermoupolis, the island’s capital and cultural heart. With its cobblestone streets, 19th-century mansions, and artistic soul, it offers a cosmopolitan island experience.
Hermoupolis Town Hall
One of the grandest municipal buildings in Greece, the Hermoupolis Town Hall was designed by famed architect Ernst Ziller in 1876. Featuring a grand 15.5-meter-wide staircase, beautiful symmetrical wings, and historic portraits, it is the proud centerpiece of Miaouli Square, a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Apollo Theater
Often called the “mini Scala of Milan,” the Apollo Theater is a gem of 19th-century architecture. Built in 1864 by Italian architect Pietro Sambo, it features ornate marble work, elegant balconies, and a rich history of performance arts—hosting everything from classical music and jazz festivals to digital arts and film events.

Ano Syros: A Labyrinth of Stories
Perched above Hermoupolis, Ano Syros is the island’s oldest settlement. Originally designed as a maze to confuse invaders, its winding alleyways now offer a magical setting to get lost, encounter warm locals, and enjoy traditional sweets or a glass of local spirit. It’s also home to the Cathedral of Saint George, offering sweeping views of the Aegean.

Saint Nicholas Church
Known as “Saint Nicholas of the Rich,” this majestic blue-domed church in the Vaporia district is Syros’ spiritual symbol. Built in 1870, its lavish interior features iconostasis carvings, marble details, and Trieste crystal chandeliers, leaving visitors in awe.

St. George Cemetery
Established in 1824, St. George’s Cemetery reflects Syros’ historic grandeur through its elaborate tombs, angelic sculptures, epigrams, and mausoleums—each a silent storyteller of the island’s past.
